In 1998, a young gay man was brutally murdered in an apparent hate crime in Laramie, Wyoming. A month later, a theatre company from New York arrived in town and their response to this flashpoint in American history became one of the most widely-performed plays of the 2000s: The Laramie Project. Ten years on, Tectonic Theater returned to the town to investigate what really had changed, whether and how they really could “move on” as suggested in the original, or if the weight of expectation would always disappoint.
Presented on the eleventh anniversary of the events with production companies around the globe, this special worldwide première staged reading of the new Epilogue included a live (shown as a recording in Sydney) introduction from Moisés Kaufman, Matthew’s mother Judy Shepard and a Q+A with the cast and crew conducted in New York. The Sydney University Dramatic Society and So What? Productions brought youth and energy to this one-off reinvigoration of the iconic original.
